In Horse Head Frederik Buyckx documents the existing connection between man and nature in the isolated lifestyle of semi-nomadic shepherds in Kyrgyzstan. He investigates how humans and animals live together, to what extend they are interdependent and how they deal with the ruthless power of nature.
Isolation is a crucial factor. The vast emptiness and majestic mountain landscapes beyond the last settlement is the area that attracts Buyckx as a person and that he explores as a photographer. The result are often monumental landscapes in which the inhabitants seem to get lost or even fade away.
The overwhelming beauty of these locations often contrasts sharply with the vulnerability to which they are exposed through harsh circumstances and the unpredictable character of Mother Nature.
